People & Books You need to Know (GIVEAWAY)

January 24, 2014

It’s a bit of a gift- what I get to do. The writing and  IF world. I want to bring you in close to our coffee dates and deep talks. You are kindred too and I so wish I could. But since these women and you are juggling all the crazy, I will come to you- introduce you to the incredible poets and teachers and lovers of God that I get to call friends. I can’t put them all in one post, so come spring- I will introduce you to more. Enjoy!

Tsh Oxenreider

My favorite moment with Tsh was hiding in a room tucked away from the crowds at Idea Camp. There was a random painting on the wall and we talked about who we are becoming and what we have to say and how we want to say it with grace and beauty. I pointed at the simple oil painting and said,

“That painting- I think it is a good picture of who you are and the way you write. Simple and winsome and beautiful and sincere.”

Tsh may be one of the most modest people I know. She wouldn’t say yes- but she wouldn’t say no. I know her words, her depth and perspective from years  around the globe, will change your perspectives in the best of ways.

Angie Smith

She is just a soul sister that is all- like the kind that regularly prays for me. She texts me nearly prophetic words and scriptures. She just loves well and deep and there are not words for friends like that. You likely know her already. But she makes everyone feel like me. She is hysterically revelatory about her life and kids and I’m sure even her Instagram followers are really just more long distant friends to her.

The Book:

Chasing God

Maybe you’ve never asked the question out loud, but you’ve wondered. You do the things that look good on paper: read your Bible, pray, attend study groups and go to church on Sundays. But you aren’t convinced you really know Him. Angie had run circles around the same paths searching for Him, frustrated at her lack of progress. And she probably would have continued to do so had it not been for one realization that changed everything.
She wasn’t following God; she was trying to catch up with Him.  And without realizing it, you may be as well.
It’s a distinction that affects every aspect of our lives with Christ, and it begins with learning where we’ve relied more on man’s explanation of God than God Himself.

Priscilla Shirer

I was walking down the hall at an event when I saw Priscilla for the first time… she was a ways down from me and started waving really big. I looked behind me. I looked beside me. Surely she was waving at someone beside me. I almost awkwardly didn’t wave back because how much more akward if I do and she isn’t. It’s Priscilla.

As I got closer she threw her arms out and said “Jennie! ” I didn’t believe her still and thought she had the wrong Jennie. I said oh I am Jennie Allen…..Not kidding. To show her she was mistaken. She cocked her head and said- “I know you wrote the Stuck Study. By the way your box is cool.”

I guess us Bible Study girls stick together. But I will love her forever for how she loved a new girl nobody knew.

Priscilla is a lover. She is big and passionate and can’t help it. She so deeply loves God and people that she lives with a constant tension, like all of us, as to how to love the world and God and her little, increasingly bigger boys and husband all well. You all know her- so she needs no introduction- but isn’t it always fun to know that behind the scenes people are as wonderful as they are from their books and stages?! She is all the more wonderful.

The book:

Got an IMPOSSIBLE situation? The anxiety it brings can wake you in the middle of a needed night’s sleep and then stalk you in the middle of broad daylight. It can sneak up on you and cast a cloak of fear and concern over your shoulders that you can’t seem to shake no matter how hard you try. It can take you down. Squash all hope. Stop you in your tracks.

IMPOSSIBLE. IMPENETRABLE. UNCHANGEABLE. Maybe so . . . until God gets involved. No matter the details of your circumstance, His raw power potential and immeasurable ability refuse to cower in the face of any challenge. Nothing is impossible with God.Nothing. Not even that thing.

Jenni Catron

This girl. She is so smart and strong- she should be intimidating and yet she is the most gentle soul. She has braved territory as a leader in the church so humbly. I respect her. I love her. I want you all to know her if you don’t yet. Just trust me. She is quietly changing the world- building scaffolding in leadership and churches that will impact the Kingdom of God for eternity. And she is just fine if she never ever got a lick of credit for it.

The Book:

We all long for significance, even as we fear we will never be good enough. We listen for God, but hear only voices of doubt and practicality. Listen again. There is a call that only you can answer. Clout is power and influence. It is an undeniable trait that opens doors and moves mountains. You have it, and you can use it to change the world around you. Learn about Jesus and define your direction, set your goals, and confront the challenges that stand between you and the person God made you to be.

  1. I recently finished “One Thousand Gifts” and am currently reading “Restless”. Both books are helping me make changes in my daily walk with God and to see my future in a way that I never thought possible!

  2. I’m currently reading too many good things at once, but oddly they are all working together: Dr. Kathy Koch & Jill Savage’s “No More Perfect Kids,” Tsh Oxenreider’s “Organized Simplicity,” and Crystal Paine’s “Money Saving Mom’s Budget” – It’s going to be an amazing 2014. I would simply love to win these 4 gems to add to the reads for this year.

Thanks Jennie; I look forward to reading more of your stuff this year too!
